Today I feel particularly inspired to write about two of my very, very best friends. Maybe it's because, in a rare twist of fate, I get to see both of them this month (I haven't lived close to either in years, so that's a really special treat). But, It's also because they are the most amazing women, and they inspire me everyday. Really. They deserve to be written about. It is so important that us women stick together, so for my woman crush Wednesday today, I present to you Jamie & Kathy & their amazing professional endeavors =)
I'll start with Jamie, since I saw her last weekend! We met in college at USC (Southern California, not South Carolina)! We met under unusual circumstances, but that's a story for another time. Despite some things we became close friends, roommates, and now sisters-in-law (yes, we're married to brothers)! One of the things I love most about Jamie is her drive to follow her dreams. She's always had a passion for sports journalism. After college, Jamie started her professional career as a reporter (and anchor sometimes, too) at WKOW in Madison, WI. She was brilliant. And after a couple years she continued her dreams and moved to a bigger network, Fox Sports North in Minneapolis. This past year she made the jump to national TV - you can find her hosting NHL network's On The Fly!! She blows my mind. I love watching her. She knows more about sports than I'll ever dream of, more then most men I know. I am so proud of her because she continues to rely on her intelligence, passion and professionalism, rather than looks, to make it in the business. And believe me, she could rely on looks. She is one of the most beautiful people I've ever met, and she doesn't even know it. She rocks her professional world for all the right reasons. And that makes me so proud.
This coming weekend I get to see Kathy (it's her bachelorette weekend- woot woot)! We met at the University of Chicago while working on our MA degrees. We were also roommates (this was actually really complicated because I didn't think it was possible that another human being existed who talks as much as I do... but one does. And her name is Kathy)! Kathy is equally amazing in her job. She is my bleeding heart. She cares so much about people and their quality of life. She is currently the Director for the Health Reform Initiative at EverThrive Illinois where she works to increase access to health care for low and middle income people in Illinois. I am so proud of her for a million reasons, but most recently because she passed her first bill (the Comprehensive Contraception Coverage Act) in the Illinois House, so now it's heading to the Senate! She is so informed, so smart. But what I love most is that at the end of the day, after researching, informing, lobbing, passing bills, etc. we will be nonsensical, ridiculous, childish girls together.
Both of these women mean so much to me. They are powerhouses, and they don't let anyone bring them down. They are strong, professional, smart women who operate in complicated worlds. I feel so proud to call them my best friends. And I am SO, SO lucky to have them both in my life! #girlpower
